Are Cell Phones the New Bible?

For thousands of years, Christians have regarded the Bible as the source of truth. The Bible is considered a book of uncommon knowledge and wisdom, even among non-believers. The author of the Bible is the Triune God. God, the Father spoke the universe into existence, and the Word of God became His Son and our savior in human form. The Holy Spirit, the third part of the Triune God, inspires individuals to achieve great things by equipping them with wisdom and understanding. The scriptures contain the answers to the hard questions surrounding life experiences. The knowledge one receives by hearing the Word of God opens the door to a fully contented life. These truths and many others in the Bible guide us through a troubled world. As it is written, “The steps of a good and righteous man are directed and established by the Lord, and He delights in his way and blesses his path.” (Psalms: 37:23). Unfortunately, many of us have turned to artificial intelligence as a guide to an unknown future. Social media influencers have become the holy spirit of the 21st century.

Let's make a few comparisons. God is a spirit who knows the end from the beginning. He knows when a bird dies and the number of hairs on every person's head. AI is a machine made by men who make mistakes. It is the accumulation of all knowledge achieved by a fallen race. God is moral and unable to lie. AI is amoral, not knowing right from wrong, and willing to receive whatever its maker requires. AI can be a benefit when morality is not in question. God can be trusted under all circumstances. For much of the 19th century, the Bible was the go-to source for guidance. Today, technology is the quick fix for a troubled world. However, this quick fix is not without its consequences. Children as young as 5 have cell phones; by age 15, they become attached to the device. Social networks, often accessed through these devices, have become the guiding light of a lost generation. Jesus promised to leave us with the ultimate influencer to guide our life in the right direction. “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26)

My wife and I, like many, purchased our first cell phone in our middle years. It was a valuable tool for travel. Little did we know that these devices, which have become so pervasive, would be responsible for a significant increase in depression and even suicides. The true purpose of life can only be found in the scriptures, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It's a sobering thought that reliance on technology may lead us away from this profound truth.
