The teacher asked the little boy to put his head down on the desk for five minutes because he was acting naughty. That afternoon as the bus pulled away from school the little boy noticed that a policeman was putting a ticket under the windshield wiper of his teacher's car. When the little boy got home from school, he found his mommy crying. Alarmed, he asked what was wrong? She gave him a reassuring hug and told him his daddy was a bad boy. That night as the little boy got ready for bed he went to kiss his daddy good night. His dad was glued to the TV watching the presidential debate. The little boy paused for a moment to watch. Finally, he asked, what are they fighting about? His daddy smiled and said 'off you go now.' The little boy went to bed feeling pretty good. Apparently, he was not the only one that misbehaved that day.
As election day nears, the mud-slinging intensifies. Unless you're living in a cave, you know we are about to elect the 45th president of the United States. The candidates seem more determined to assassinate the character of their opponent than solve the troubling issues facing the country. If that weren’t enough, every wannabe political pundit, commentator, and celebrity have taken a turn at blasting one or the other. Integrity has always been hard to find in people whether they're your next door neighbor or aspiring leaders of the free world. The Bible has much to say about the corrupted nature of men. “People did not think it was important to have a true knowledge of God. So God left them and allowed them to have their own worthless thinking. And so they do what they should not do.”(Romans 1:28) No one seems to be able to rise above this self-righteous kind of thinking.
One day, Jesus was asked to judge the indiscretion of a young woman caught in the act of adultery. The penalty was death by stoning. Jesus told the pompous crowd of religious bigots, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”(John 8:7) The mob left without one stone being thrown.
No one can be trusted to make honorable decisions all the time. We are plunging into a deeper moral decline by the day with no recovery in sight. It's time to see things as they really are, there's no hope in men, only God can change the nature of people. “ Yes, in the past your lives were full of those sins. You lived the way the world lives. That same spirit is now working in those who refuse to obey God. All of us lived like that, trying to please our sinful selves. We do all the things our bodies and minds want. (Ephesians 2) It is this kind of worthless thinking that will elect the 45th president of the United States. “But God is rich in mercy, and he loves us very much. We were spiritually dead because of all we had done against him. But he gave us new life together with Christ. (You have been saved by God’s grace.”(Ephesians 2:5)
