Curse or Climate Change
Fifteen years ago, Vice President Al Gore published his best-selling book “An Inconvenient Truth.” He successively followed with a documentary by the same title and won a Nobel Prize for the effort. Gore challenged the nations of the world to eliminate carbon emission as well as industrial toxic pollution before the Earth faced severe global warming that would threaten to terminate life. There is no real evidence that we have reached that extreme at this time, but the perception remains bothersome. The more likely inconvenient truth is that the Earth has experienced cycles of climate change throughout history. A good example is the well-documented Woolly Mammoth, a prehistoric relative of the modern elephant. Many well-preserved carcasses have been discovered in the frozen tundra of the Arctic. This suggests to scientists that the Mammoth was overcome by a sudden drastic change in the climate before they could move further south to a friendlier environment. It was Gore’s book that weaponized climate change to be used for political leverage. Today the fear of atmospheric extermination is uppermost in the minds of young people. We have been led to believe that we can somehow control the climate.
When God created Adam He placed him in a perfect earthly environment. Nothing threatened Adam because God was in control. God intended for Adam's descendants to live in harmony within their perfect environment for eternity. God gave Adam authority over all He had created on the earth. “Then God said, “Let us make a man—someone like ourselves, to be the master of all life upon the earth and in the skies and in the seas.”(Gen. 1:26) And then something unexpected happened, Adam disobeyed God and lost his authority. “And to Adam, God said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate the fruit when I told you not to, I have placed a curse upon the soil. All your life you will struggle to extract a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles for you..”(Gen. 3:17,18) God temporarily lifted His hand of protection when Adam refused to live up to the authority God gave him. Adam’s race has been left on its own to wrestle with the out-of-sync atmospheric conditions since Adam lost his dominion. Men have proven they are incapable of controlling their own lives, let alone the climate.
There is good news, God has not abandoned the Earth, He will lift the curse when he renovates the Earth in the final stages of the age to come. Until that time, corruptible men are left on their own to deal with the curse. There is some Bible evidence that weather, as well as plate tectonic movement, will continue to worsen as we move closer to the end of this age. “ And there will be great earthquakes, and famines in many lands, and epidemics, and terrifying things happening in the heavens. (Luke 21:11) And there was an incredible hailstorm from heaven; hailstones weighing a hundred pounds fell from the sky onto the people below, and they cursed God because of the terrible hail.”(Rev. 16:21) Christians are not subject to the worst of these end-time conditions. God’s wrath is for rebellious mankind, not His Christian family. “God would protect all those who worshiped him, and disaster could come only to those who had forsaken him!”(Ezra 8:22) Climate out of control is a sign of things to come.
